IMPACCT Brooklyn’s ‘Hidden Figures’

Bernell Grier, IMPACCT Brooklyn’s Executive Director led the organization in a private screening of “Hidden Figures.” The outing was followed by an engaging discussion about the similarities between the movies dynamics and the work IMPACCT Brooklyn does for the community.

Ms. Grier explains, “The film has many underlying themes that resonate with challenges the staff at IMPACCT Brooklyn face; such as combating social injustice and racism and advocating for fairness; understanding new technology and the need to be a continuously learning organization; breaking down internal and external barriers and silos to demonstrate the strength in numbers; and doing what is necessary when all seems impossible.”

“Hidden Figures” is a film dedicated to three incredible African American trailblazers (Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson) who worked for NASA and who at the height of racism in the 1950s went against all odds and became the brains behind many of NASA’s assignments. “The movie showed me that we’re not just some insignificant people doing insignificant work.  We do and will continue to have an impact on every person and family that we touch. We matter!” said Financial Counselor, Daune Harrison-Iqbal.

Ms. Grier pointed out that the work IMPACCT Brooklyn does is perhaps not as transparent to the community at large. In fact, community development corporations and organizations are not necessarily known to the masses and may also be deemed “Hidden”.  The staff felt inspired by the opportunity. “I received so many thank you messages and comments; even feedback that staff members immediately signed up for computer training…an unexpected outcome”. “My hope is to encourage staff to think beyond the normal and day to day, to discover, question and lead from where you stand to IMPACCT Brooklyn,” stated Grier.
