IMPACCT Brooklyn In The News

IMPACCT Brooklyn continues to lead in messaging the importance of affordable and fair housing throughout local and national media.

Executive Director Bernell K. Grier most recently appeared on NY1’s “In Focus with Cheryl Wills” to speak about the affordable housing crisis with Rep. Yvette Clarke. She related the community need that IMPACCT Brooklyn hears about every day from community members.

“It just shows there really is an absolute demand for what we call affordable housing,” Grier said. “What were finding is that a lot of the people that are really in need spans from really low income to middle income family.”

Grier also spoke to the New York Times in March about the affordable housing market in Brooklyn, and how developers are reacting to a rising vacancy rate in new buildings across the borough.

“When you talk about affordable housing, one of the questions is: affordable to whom?” Grier said to the Times, which also featured an affordable housing tenant from The Hub, a Downtown Brooklyn building that had its lottery overseen by IMPACCT Brooklyn’s Affordable Housing Marketing team.

In February, Real Estate Director Kuza Woodard was featured in a Q&A with AIA Pittsburgh about what the city could learn from Brooklyn about affordability and development.

“What we’ve done, and what we can do in terms of making sure the folks who have lived here a long time get to remain in the neighborhoods post-gentrification is to preserve the existing affordable units,” Woodard said.
