Celebrating our #CommunityMoms

A full house of Brooklyn residents celebrated a pair of inspirational community moms on Saturday, May 19 for their drive to improve their lives and the lives of their families.

Stephanie Burnett and Fatoumata Kante were honored as IMPACCT Brooklyn’s Community Moms as part of the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development’s Mother’s Day campaign to celebrate mothers and caretakers who contribute to our families’ and communities’ well being.

“Both Stephanie and Fatoumata are amazing examples of focus and commitment,” says IMPACCT Brooklyn Financial Counselor Daune Harrison-Iqbal. “I’m incredibly proud of both of them.”

Harrison-Iqbal has worked with both Burnett and Kante as their counselor after they attended IMPACCT Brooklyn’s free Personal Finance workshop — much like the participants on the May 19 workshop. The monthly seminar helps individuals better understand their money and what they can do to both save more and improve their credit.

The workshop walks people of all different economic backgrounds and needs through how personal budgeting works, and how they can get a more significant return on investment on their own money. Participants can then work one-on-one with counselors to make sure they have the support to meet their financial goals.

For Kante, that return on investment meant turning $500 in savings to $10,000 by the following year. She then took IMPACCT Brooklyn’s First-Time Home Buyer workshop to learn how she could access down-payment assistance, which she then used to buy a home for her family.

“What IMPACCT Brooklyn does is incredibly important,” Kante says, adding that she continues to use the education she got at IMPACCT Brooklyn to make sure she and her family remain on a path toward financial stability and success.

The #DYCDCommunityMoms campaign is an annual citywide effort by the city in observance of Mother’s Day to honor mothers, sisters, aunts, teachers, mentors, and caregivers who inspire our communities. You can find more amazing moms by searching with the hashtag #DYCDCommunityMoms.
