What Our Community Imagines for 638 Myrtle Avenue

Last fall, IMPACCT Brooklyn put a call out to the Bed Stuy and Clinton Hill community to imagine how a city-owned lot can offer affordable housing, vibrant retail, a community facility, and a permanent neighborhood garden.

More than 60 individuals gathered on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017 at Brooklyn Community Arts & Media High School to discuss the future of 638 Myrtle Avenue, a property owned by the city and that currently hosts a community garden.

Community members — along with representatives from local elected leaders’ offices, organizations, and other stakeholders — came together to discuss and outline their vision for the lot, including members of the currently operating Myrtle Village Green community garden.

With help from the Hester Street Collaborative, the multilingual discussion gathered the participants’ priorities. Among them were:

  • Nearly half prefer deep affordability (30% AMI) in any new residential construction
  • Most recognize the need for bigger housing units with 2 to 3 bedrooms that can accommodate growing families
  • A third of participants want any commercial construction to include healthier grocery store and farmers’ market options
  • Nearly half of participants would like to see a shared community space that includes some sort of kitchen facility
