BROOKLYN, NY — Yesterday, Mayor Mamdani released New York City’s “Block by Block” housing plan to address the ongoing housing crisis, and build and preserve 400,000 new affordable homes over the next decade.
Jamal Clayton Robinson, Executive Director of IMPACCT Brooklyn issued the following statement in response:
“IMPACCT Brooklyn was proud to stand with Mayor Mamdani as he unveiled his ‘SPEED’ housing reforms last week, building on the vision laid out in this broader ‘Block by Block’ housing plan. Together, these proposals recognize that New York cannot solve the affordability crisis without urgently building and preserving deeply affordable housing, while protecting the communities most vulnerable to displacement. We are encouraged to see the administration center tenant protections, faster delivery of affordable homes, and investments in historically underserved neighborhoods. For working-class New Yorkers, especially Black and brown families, this is the kind of bold, community-driven leadership our city needs.”
With about 30% of Brooklyn renters severely rent burdened and a boroughwide housing vacancy rate of 1.27%, data confirms that Central Brooklyn residents remain at high risk of displacement.
