IMPACCT Brooklyn honors the legacy of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29th at 100. Carter championed housing as a human right, stating, “One of the basic human rights is having a decent place to live, and raise a family.”

As president, he prioritized urban development and affordable housing. In 1980, he signed the Housing and Community Development Act, boosting public and Section 8 housing funding by 30%, and revitalizing urban centers. His 1977 Community Reinvestment Act fought redlining and expanded credit and homeownership in underserved areas.

After office, Carter dedicated himself to Habitat for Humanity, starting in New York’s East Village. Despite health challenges, he continued building homes and advocating for affordable housing worldwide, embodying his lifelong commitment to service.

President Carter’s impact on housing and human rights inspires us to build equitable, sustainable communities for all.
