On Tuesday, January 10, 2017, IMPACCT Brooklyn’s very own Marketing Director, Stephanie Blue was featured in a segment on BRIC TV alongside New York City Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo. Blue and Cumbo both gave their audience a significant amount of information on qualifying for affordable housing and gentrification in Brooklyn.

One of the issues that applicants face when considering affordable housing lottery applications is falling under the area median income (AMI). AMI is the total income of a family depending on region and family size. In 2016 the AMI in New York City for a family of four was $90,600.

“It’s not the income of the people who were in the community before that we are looking at currently, and it’s very unfortunate for those that currently reside in the neighborhoods that the developments are going up in, because they won’t necessarily qualify,” said Blue, when asked about Area Media Incomes and qualifying for the affordable housing lotteries in gentrified areas.

Council Member Cumbo believes that the people currently residing in Brooklyn should also lift their voices and make some change. Council member Laurie Cumbo is urging Brooklyn residents to take a stand and let their voices be heard in the community by reaching out to congress and voicing their concerns.

IMPACCT Brooklyn helps residents;
