From the desk of Chi Osse: Tax Lien Sales – Is Your Home on the List?

Your property may be on the tax lien sale list. This means you have missed payments on your property tax, your water/sewage bill, or other property related charges and the City is allowed to sell your debt to a third party (usually a private investor or a private debt servicer). This third party has the right to collect what you owe.

According to the Department of Finance, this does not mean that your property has been sold, but if you do not resolve your outstanding debt, the lien sale can be a first step toward foreclosure. The next tax lien sale is May 20, 2025 and we are encouraging you to take actions to remove your property off the list before then.

We will be partnering with the Department of Finance on two workshops for homeowners to learn how you can remove your property off the list. The workshops will be held at 1368 Fulton Street in the Multipurpose Room on the following dates and times:

·   March 25th, 2025 from 12PM to 4PM

·   April 22nd, 2025 from 5PM to 8PM

Additionally, you can come to our office for 1:1 Homeownership Counseling through Neighborhood Housing Services of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Counseling will be offered from 11AM to 3PM every other Thursday at 1360 Fulton Street in Suite 500. Please call our office or email Morgan Beatty at mbeatty@council.nyc.gov to schedule an appointment.

If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office. You can come in person from 10AM to 5PM Monday to Friday, email district36@council.nyc.gov, or call us at 718-919-0740.
