The new year looks bright for IMPACCT Brooklyn’s Community & Tenant Organizing team.

Sixteen community members representing different parts of Brooklyn including Brownsville, Williamsburg, and Flatbush, came together on Dec. 21 to celebrate their victories in 2017 and develop goals for 2018.

“We’re focused more than ever on helping tenants understand their housing rights across Brooklyn,” Interim Director of Community Organizing Naila Moore said.

“A big part of that is recognizing our triumphs and listening to our neighbors about what they need going forward,” Moore added.

The Community & Tenant Organizing will share more information about tenant rights with neighbors at a public community meeting on Thursday, Jan. 18 at the New Lots Library in East New York starting at 6:30 p.m.

In 2017, the team helped resolve more than 65 lease issues and mediated 30 complaints of landlord harassment. About 170 tenants in all relied on IMPACCT Brooklyn for consultations.

Those in attendance also told staff they want more people to know about and engage with IMPACCT Brooklyn. Many of them also signed up to get the word out as volunteers for the organization.

“We’re optimistic that we can reach more Brooklynites who need our help, thanks in part to the support from neighbors like the ones who joined us for this meeting,” Community Organizer Audrey Mohammed said.

Participants at December’s event were also treated with handmade gifts generously donated to IMPACCT Brooklyn by the New Utrecht Library Crochet/Knit Club.

Local restaurant Ma’s Fish and Chips, whose owners participated in IMPACCT Brooklyn’s small business workshops, catered the meal.
